Review from Home Theater Magazine Review from HomeTheaterMag.com: Oppo BDP-83SE With all of the resources that are available to the Blu-ray Disc Association's major manufacturers, it's remarkable that the first company to cure the ills of standalone Blu-ray players was Oppo Digital with its $499 BDP-83 (HT, September 2009). Upon that player's release, many enthusiasts were using the PlayStation 3 for its speed and reliability. Standalone players were too slow and prone to disc incompatibility issues. They also had a hodgepodge of hardware profiles and decoding and interactivity features that bewildered consumers. When Oppo's BDP-83 came along, it did everything that a Blu-ray player should do, and it did it right and fast. In short, it was a next-gen Blu-ray player that acted like one. That player earned Home Theater's Top Pick of the Year in Source Components and overall Product of the Year for 2009 (HT, November 2009). Plus, it earned a check from me to Oppo. The BDP-83 I bought last year as a reference has been bulletproof during the time I've owned it. Compatibility issues have been few and far between. But when they've come up, Oppo has acted swiftly with hassle-free firmware updates from the Internet. It has been so bulletproof that it's difficult to imagine changing it out or upgrading it. I bought a Samsung BD-UP5000 when they were first released since it played both HD DVD and Blu-Ray discs. Poor support, lack-luster performance and the end of HD DVDs left me wanting something "better". I found what I was looking for in the Oppo BDP-83. Oppo is a customer-driven company and conducted an extended beta test to uncover bugs. The beta testers had to accept the state of the player before it could be released! I've emailed Oppo support a few times and they are prompt to respond with real answers not just an automated or canned response - usually the same day. I can't say enough good things about the company. The '83 is rock solid. It has not frozen or even hiccuped once. It plays all the discs I've put in. (The 5000 had trouble with some and often required the discs to be fingerprint free and occationally locked up requiring restart to even eject a disc.) To me, one of the important features of a disc player is SD DVD upscaling. Standard definition can look pretty bad on a HDTV. Even the networks and cable channels often do a marginal job up-converting. My 5000 had a very good upconverter (Reon) but the '83 is better - something you'd expect from a company that focused on SD DVD players long after the introduction of HD DVD and Blu-Ray. Sometimes I forget I'm watching SD material! Most high def players are sluggish, acting more like underpowered computers than audio/video gear. Boot and disc load times often exceed 30 seconds. Not the '83 - it's responds more like a DVD player than a computer. The tray opens in under 3 seconds from pressing the eject button (with power off) and playback begins in under 10 seconds (for SD DVD). For Blu-Ray, play start does depend on what enhancements the content provider loads before playback can begin (custom menus, etc.). (Remember Blu-Ray discs allow the content provider lots of control over the player and playback of the content.) The '83 decodes all advanced audio formats: Dolby TrueHD, DTS HD Master Audio, etc. So the lossless audio is available via 7.1 analog outs as well as PCM over HDMI. You don't need an A/V receiver that includes decoders for these formats - the player does the work. Speaker management provided by the '83 makes the 7.1 analog outputs usable, but with some limitations: The bass management frequency is fixed at 80 Hz, and there are limitations to speaker distance delays. The user manual explains things so that the user/installer can make important setup and usage decisions. For example, there is a section that explains the various output resolutions and which is best for various scenarios; and another that helps choose the correct "zoom" for various disc and TV aspect combinations. So often, modern computer-based A/V gear is released without a complete set of features with the promise of adding them later. Again the '83 was released fully featured so there's little to wait for. But Oppo realizes there will be bugs to fix and new features to add as well as new disc behavior to support. They've provided THREE separate ways to upgrade firmware: via a network connection, via CD/DVD or USB memory. I use a universal remote to control all my A/V gear and thanks to a document provided by Oppo, I was able to program my remote prior to receiving the unit. Most of the commands use the same data as their previous players so I was able to start with the configuration for an older mode. Oppo provided an Excel file with all the control codes in a format that can be imported into Universal Remote Control and Pronto remotes (maybe others). I've never seen this level of support from any other consumer electronics company and this material existed BEFORE product release. Where documentation was lacking, customer support provided the missing information. There's been one (public beta) firmware update and a user

Great picture and Wireless Netflix By Adrien Caulder Pickard This product is made by BestBuy (Insignia is BestBuy's house brand - kind of like generic products from the grocery store). What BestBuy saves by not putting a fancy Sony or Samsung label on the product gets passed on to you. Still, the player is made well and performs exceptionally for this price. Now, understand that there are players that do more stuff, maybe have cooler menus and might have better picture/sound. That said, your average Joe ain't never gonna notice any of that stuff. Only videophiles are even going to hint at the picture quality on this player being less than optimal. The fact is that Blu Ray looks darn good on every player that you can buy today, and on screens smaller than, say, 100" the picture is perfect. This player lacks internal decoders for DTS-MA and DolbyHD (it can pass these to your receiver to decode, though). Cha-ching = savings for you. Streaming NetFlix is pretty awesome. Make sure that your wireless router is set up as a WPA (not WEP) encrypted router. Set up couldn't be easier. Picture quality is outstanding. Some movies (like Muppets in Space) look just as good as DVD. TV shows (like Dora the Explorer) fare a little worse (VCR quality). But other shows, like Heroes, look high def. Newer movies look comparable to DVD when streamed as well. This is a very cool product and functions just as promised. Definitely a good quality product. Even more so, given its price. 13 of 13 people found the following review helpful. NS-WBRDVD IS EXCELLENT By Jose A. Ruiz Everything you desire is incorporated in this excellent product, WI-FI, ethernet, BDLIVE, up conversion, NETFLIX, automatic upgrading, USB upgrading, etc etc. Excellent buy at a very good price 9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Go with the newer Model: NS-WBRDVD2 with Auto Resume By Alvin English This is a nice basic Blu-Ray player. I purchased it from Best Buy in February. As others have stated it lacks auto resume for DVD's and Netflix streamed movies. It has a built-in WiFi module. For the price it is difficult to beat. I gave away the player and purchased the newer Insignia model NS-WBRDVD2 which is basically the same, but has auto resume. The newer model is a little quieter too. See all 21 customer reviews...

This blu-ray player produces a top quality picture. Setup was painless. However, if you like to add all devices to your cable box remote control, I could not get it to recognize this player. I tried all the Sony codes in the manual and then tried the learn process and the cable remote could not operate this player. Not a deal breaker but an annoyance. This player has BD Live which allows for firmware updates over your network but has to be hard wired. It has no wireless capabilty. It does not have some of the newer network features such as Net Flix, You-Tube, Pandora, etc. But with BD Live, maybe these capabilities will be added in future firmware updates. My unit arrived with .006 firmware version. Web site review indicated that version .007 was the latest firmware available. I called Sony for the .007 firmward disc and they sent it free of charge and it arrived in 4 days. Great service from Sony. There is a Quick Start option that I selected so I find this player to be very fast from disc insert to start of movie. Bottom line: If you are looking for a top quality Blu-Ray player, you can't go wrong with this one. And the firmware can be updated as newer versions come available. If you want the latest internet features, they are not offered with this model. I would highly recommend this player. 13 of 14 people found the following review helpful. Sony Blue-Ray By VIC I received this player for Christmas and have now had time to watch numerous videos on it. This is my first Blu-Ray so I don't have other to compare it to, only what I have read in other reviews. First I will say this an inexpensive no-frills player. If you want bells and whistles you need to pay more and look elsewhere. On comparing the Blue-Ray format to the progressive scan (upconvert) DVD I find that the picture for most live action films is simply outstanding and an order of magnitude better. On animations such as the recent release of Sleeping Beauty to Blu-Ray the difference is only slight. However, I don't see that as a function of the player but the actual film. Setup for the machine was breeze and everything worked as advertised on setup. I am beginning to think that that is a rarity anymore. I haven't had the machine long enough to testify to its reliability, but I have found Sony products to be generally reliable in the past. There are only a few things that I have a problem with, and these are only small nits: - I would prefer an eject button on the remote. - I don't like the idea of firmware updates. That implies they will be continually tinkering with this. Get the standard down and leave it alone. I have heard horror stories on these firmware updates. The other thing bad about this is the fact that you have to plug it into a network via a Cat5E cable. What do you do if you have no network? - All of my other devices which use an HDMI cable allow me to have the sound through the TV or the Stereo amp at the same time. This allows me to choose how I want the audio with little effort. In this device you must set it up to play through one or the other. If you want to change it you must go back to the audio setup menu and reconfigure the device. One other commenter said he experienced problems getting the cable TV remote programmed for this device. I use a Logitech Harmony 550 programmable remote for all my devices now and I had no problem getting this new unit programmed into that remote. Update: After roughly 5 months of use I have had zero problems with this unit. Therefore I will conclude that it is most likely very reliable and will not fail until it is worn out. 8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Good Machine, but Caution is indicated By R. Dixon I have two identical BDP-BX2 machines. One is being used "out of the box" and is an excellent machine. Plays every Blu Ray I have.

Riga Of the new model year '2009' Blu Ray players, we own the LG BD370, Samsung BD-P1600, and a PS3. By far, the BD370 is the nicest for Blu Ray content. Loading is FAST and the drive is completely silent (this is not the case on the BD-P1600 by Samsung). Piano Black finish on the face is plastic, and looks good. We have found that it does not scratch easily too! The rest of the case is black-ish metal and sturdy. One of the great things about the LG BD370 is you can customize the look of the interface on your TV. There are 4 themes and all are in high-definition. The remote on the BD370 changed from the BD300, and I feel it was a step down. It's got a faux-leather finish on it - why? No idea. The one improvement is buttons that don't get used much are hidden behind a panel on the remote. Netflix 'Watch Instantly' is very cool and the setup is literally 30-40 seconds if you already have an account. Just after we got ours, it alerted us that a firmware update was available! It added CinemaNow - we hadn't used CinemaNow before, but a quick registration on their site and connecting was just as easy as Netflix. Rented a couple movies to try it out - VERY cool. YouTube is also available on the player and it's AWESOME. I'd easily compare it with an AppleTV, though believe it or not, the BD370 is a bit faster at searching and playing YouTube videos - it also does them in Full Screen, no problem. One odd thing we've noticed... with Netflix and CinemaNow and YouTube we have only watched 3 or 4 movies on Blu Ray. So much other content available that this player is really a STEAL - it's a fantastic Blu Ray player (audio and video as good as you imagine it would be), but WOW is it awesome to have a player that does so much other stuff. No wireless on this player, nor does it have built-in memory for using BD-Live. Neither of these items should be cause for concern - I haven't seen a BD-Live feature YET that has been worth while... all the good stuff is usually already on the Blu Ray disk itself. The thing that makes it just a bit better than our Samsung BD-P1600 is the front display. The circular button assembly on the front glows a soft blue when playing Blu Ray, soft red when playing DVD, and purple on certain Netflix, YouTube, and CinemaNow video. The main display is also helpful, showing 'NETFLX', etc and most importantly, you can SEE the display (the Samsung player's display is so dim you wouldn't believe it). For the price and feature set, I don't think there's another player I'd even consider after having used them all! 419 of 441 people found the following review helpful. Wild Blu Yonder By Chris Boylan While LG broke new ground with their BD300, the first Blu-ray player to include Netflix online streaming and YouTube, the BD370 is simply more of the same, with slight improvements to their already quick disc loading times, but little to no improvement to their Achilles heel: video performance on DVD upconversion and 1080i Blu-ray content. Choosing among current Blu-ray Disc players revolves around two things: performance (audio and video) and online content access. If performance is the most important element for you, then LG player should probably not be your first choice. The BD370 is decent at DVD upconversion but it fails to properly de-interlace 1080i material. 1080i is used for many nature documentaries and concert films on Blu-ray Disc due to the underlying frame rates not being compatible with 1080p/24 fps encoding. Because the player can't detect and correct for the underlying 2:2 or 3:2 cadence, 1080i material is actually resolved at half resolution (1920x540 pixels), which means you effectively lose half of those precious details from your high definition picture. It's true that 1080i content represents a fairly small portion of what's available on

The wait times are not too bad at all, and as others have said, the picture quality is excellent. Standard DVD upconversion is excellent. There are a few minor issues that I've found, which I'll get to. Setup out of the box was quick and simple. I plugged it in and set a few audio options, video needed no adjustment from the defaults. The network setup wasn't too bad, but I did have some issues with encryption. I also purchased a new wireless router (the Netgear RangeMax WNDR3300 Wireless-N Router) to replace the near-decade-old Linksys I have. I tried two different encryption types, and both both times the player could connect after entering the key, but refused to obtain an IP address. Disabling encryption on the router caused the player to obtain an IP address quickly, and setup was complete. Currently I'm running without encryption but with MAC address filtering. I'm okay with that, but I might go back and try encryption again now that I've downloaded a firmware update for the router. Other reviews state no problems setting up with encryption, so the problem might be specific to my setup. Netflix functionality took a few seconds to set up. Anything in your "Watch Instantly" queue is displayed in the Netflix menu and you can rate any of them from the player. Unfortunately, at this time there is no ability to browse or search for anything that's not already in your queue. With the right connection, the higher quality video is quite good - as good or slightly better than standard definition cable. At this point, audio doesn't get any better than stereo, and while it's not crystal clear, it's not bad. Hopefully some new features will be added in future firmware updates. The YouTube player is nice too. This supports searches, "Top Rated", "Most Viewed", "Recent Videos", etc. It's fun to play around with, and I'm glad the feature exists on this player, even if the novelty might wear off a little over time. I did a firmware update this morning (it wasn't available yesterday), and now there is a new menu item for CinemaNow. I haven't messed with it much, but apparently you can "rent" a movie for around $3.99 or "buy" a movie for $15-$20. There's a section for TV, but it merely says "Coming Soon". I don't see the point in this really, since Netflix covers the rentals (for much cheaper), and the movies seems to be the same price as going out and buying the DVD. I'd rather have the DVD than an over-compressed soft copy for the same price. I can't get the Media Server stuff to work at all [fixed! -- see updates below]. So far, I've dedicated about 6 or 7 hours to getting this to work. None of the other reviews have mentioned a problem with this, so I guess it must be me. I installed the included Nero MediaHome 4 Essentials software, and added a directory to share. I started the server fine, but the player constantly tells me "No Server Found". I have tried two different wireless routers and an infinite number of settings adjustments. My firewalls are off. I just can't get a break. As a software engineer with a degree in the field, you can bet that it's pretty frustrating for this to beat me. I'll update the review if and when I get it working. Others have not had the same problem as me, though. So I imagine that this is NOT a problem with the player. There are also a number of little features related to the playing of DVD's and BD's that I like. The player remembers each movie's last position when it was stopped and/or removed. So the next time you start up that movie, it will resume where you left off. The video settings are reasonably full-featured as well. Brightness, Contrast, etc. are all adjustable, and you can adjust colors manually (just the reds, just the yellows, etc.) Upconverted DVD's have a couple of NR options, and there's an auto-contrast

First it plays all the DVD recordable formats. It loads DVD and blu-ray very fast. It has 5.1 analog outs as well as HDMI and standard 2 channel audio. It has distance settings for your speakers when using the 5.1 outputs. The image quality is excellent. I have compared it to both top line Sony and Panasonic models and find it superior to both. It is a great buy. 33 of 34 people found the following review helpful. Stylish, quick player By Beth We actually picked this up at Sam's Club very cheap and have been impressed with the quality. We have an older TV and can only go to 1080i resolution but it seems excellent, I can't imagine the picture being anything but perfect on a new TV with the HDMI cable included. If you aren't concerned about the streaming features, having a wireless connection, or internal memory for BD Live features, you will probably enjoy this as much as we do if you can find it at the price we did (
