Sony BDP-N460 (October 13, 2009)In addition to playing Blu-ray Discs and DVDs, the Sony BDP-N460 streams one of the largest collections of premium and free on-demand entertainment from the BRAVIA Internet Video platform, including thousands of movies, TV programs, and music from from over 25 leading content providers--including YouTube, Slacker, and Netflix. Stream video from one of the largest collections of premium and free on-demand entertainment, including thousands of movies, TV programs, and music from YouTube, Slacker, and, later this fall, Netflix. The Sony BDP-N460 incorporates Sony’s Precision Cinema HD Upscale technology that converts standard-definition signals (480i) to near HD quality (see larger image). It supports Dolby TrueHD and dts-HD audio codecs for up to 7.1 channels of high-definition sound, and there's even quick start-up mode which begins operating your Blu-ray Disc player in approximately six seconds from the time it is powered on. You can also play and upscale your standard DVDs to near high definition. And navigation of the player's menus is a breeze thanks to the icon-based Xross Media Bar (XMB) menu system. Dolby TrueHD and dts HD- 7.1 Analog: In the past, most audio codecs used compression that actually removes some sound data to transmit audio from the disc to the audio circuitry. This means that what you hear is a subset of the original audio. However, newer formats allow the audio to be compressed but not discarded, allowing the original audio to come through once it's been decoded. This player allows you to stream the audio out via HDMI to a capable receiver or through analog 7.1 outputs for maximum compatibility with high end receivers. And with Bonus View, you can enjoy "picture-in-picture" capability with select Blu-ray titles. External memory (sold separately) is required. Quick Start Mode: Quick Start Mode lets you begin operating your Sony Blu-ray Disc player approximately six seconds from the time it's powered on. Ethernet port lets you connect the BDP-S360 to your home's existing broadband network to access bonus features on BD-Live enabled Blu-ray Disc movies. Bonus View feature provides "picture-in-picture" capability with select Blu-ray Disc titles--useful for viewing director or actor commentary while the movie plays. x.v.Color output plays AVCHD-format discs with support for the international xvYCC color standard, producing images with nearly twice as many viewable colors as the existing RGB color standard. BRAVIA Sync technology lets you enjoy the convenience of one remote control to operate and control all your compatible home entertainment devices. It utilizes the HDMI CEC function to easily turn on and control your compatible HDMI-connected components without having to use multiple remote controls. 24p True Cinema technology lets you watch films at their intended 24 fps (frames per second)--the way movies are shot and mastered--so you can enjoy cinematic picture quality. Precision Cinema HD Upscale circuitry delivers accurate and vivid images with clarity and detail that are faithful to the source--whether film or video (upscaled image quality will vary). This circuitry uses advanced conversion and processing to detect image changes at the pixel level, rather than at the level of whole scan lines. Additionally, separate algorithms are used to process the moving and still parts of an image, resulting in sharp backgrounds with moving objects that are free from motion artifacts. That's six times the picture data contained on DVDs, which are encoded at only 480p. 24p True Cinema Video Output Most of all Hollywood movies are shot at 24 frames per second, and Blu-ray Disc movies are mastered at 24 frame per second, so it is only fitting that the Sony Blu-ray Disc Players can output your films at 1080/24p for a true film-like experience at home. Of course, Sony Blu-ray Disc Players can also output at 1080/60p for more traditional HDTV sets on the market. Either way Sony has you covered for the best picture possible in Full 1080p. Backwards compatible and Upscaling All existing Blu-ray Disc players will play your standard DVD collection without a problem. And with built-in 1080p video upscaling, they'll look even better. More Sound This Sony BD player is compatible with Dolby TrueHD, Dolby’s next-generation lossless technology developed for high-definition disc-based media. Dolby TrueHD delivers tantalizing sound that is bit-for-bit identical to the studio master, unlocking the true high-definition entertainment experience on next-generation discs. When coupled with high-definition video, Dolby TrueHD offers an unprecedented home theater experience that lets you enjoy sound as stunning as the high-definition picture. Delivers enthralling studio-master-quality sound that unlocks the true high-definition entertainment experience on next-generation discs. Offers more discrete channels than ever before for impeccable surround sound. Compatible with the A/V receivers and home-theaters-in-a-box (HTIBs) of today and tomorrow. Dialogue normalization maintains the same volume level when you change to other Dolby Digital and Dolby TrueHD programming. Dynamic range control (Night mode) enables you to customize audio playback to reduce peak volume levels (no loud surprises) while experiencing all the details in the soundtrack, enabling late-night viewing of high-energy surround sound without disturbing others. Xross Media Bar Xross (pronounced Cross) is Sony's Technical-Emmy award-winning graphic user interface for Sony WEGA and BRAVIA televisions and PS3 and PSX game systems. The interface features category icons spread horizontally across the screen that organize the viewing options (TV, Music, Internet, Tools, etc...). When a category icon is selected on the horizontal bar, a vertical bar appears showing the viewing options within that category. Using the directional pad on your remote, you can easily maneuver horizontally from category to category, then scroll vertically through individual viewing options to easily navigate through the wide range of programming available on today's televisions. x.v Color Thanks to the adoption of a newly approved international color standard called xvYCC (an option in the HDMI v1.3 spec and which Sony participated in creating), the color space has been greatly expanded. All Sony XBR HDTVs support the xvYCC color profile (Extended YCC Colorimetry for Video Applications), or "x.v. color" for short. Standard RGB color space allows the display of a portion of the colors that are viewable to the human eye. The next generation "xvYCC" color space actually offers  an available range of colors that exceeds what human eyes can recognize. Next-generation "xvYCC" color space supports 1.8 times as many colors as existing HDTV signals Lets HDTVs display colors more accurately Enables displays with more natural and vivid colors Amazon Instant Video Watch Amazon Instant Video on This DeviceChoose from over 90,000 movies and TV shows, with thousands available in HDPurchase or rent the latest new release movies and TV showsStart a one-month free trial of Amazon Prime and get unlimited, commercial-free, instant streaming of more than 5,000 movies and TV showsBegin watching instantly - no waiting for a downloadPause, fast-forward, rewind, or watch it over again - just like a DVD

By GrafZeppelin127 I've had this player for several days now. Blu-Ray playback appears to be good, although I don't really have anything to compare it to. But so far its other attributes leave a great deal to be desired. Netflix playback is especially poor. I waited to buy this unit for its Netflix capability to kick in, and was using the Roku HD player in the meantime. Even with a wired connection, the Sony's Netflix HD content playback is noticeably sluggish and jerky, almost to the point of being unwatchable, compared to the Roku player connected wirelessly to the same router. I watched parts of the same video on each player and the difference is not subtle; it is pronounced. Also, the upscaled DVD picture on this player is very, VERY soft, almost to the point of looking out of focus, even with the TV's Sharpness setting turned up to maximum. This is in comparison to the Sony DVP-NS700H upscaling DVD player I had been using previously, which appears to have a sharper, crisper image; again, the difference is noticeable. I'm going to try a few more DVDs and see if Sony and/or Netflix tech support can address the streaming problem, before I give up and return the unit. I had hoped this player would be a nice addition to my BRAVIA setup (46" Z4100 LCD TV), but so far it's let me down. UPDATE: I called Sony and went through three levels of support. They agreed with my description and assessment of the Netflix HD picture quality and told me there was nothing that could be done about it. I also called Netflix and they couldn't help either; none of their suggestions worked. If I can't resolve this myself I'm going to have to return the player. UPDATE 2: Amazon on Demand HD video looks fine; very good, actually. Looks like this is a Netflix issue (probably the onboard software, not the stream, since Netflix still looks fine on the Roku) that will have to be fixed with a firmware update sometime in the future. UPDATE 3: CNET has now reviewed this product. From their review of the player's Netflix performance: "We also noticed that the overall streaming video quality seemed to be slightly worse than we're used to seeing. We saw more "jerky" playback than we're used to seeing on other players". UPDATE 4: The Sony firmware update issued on December 22 has had no effect on the Netflix HD streaming quality. It looks the same as it did before. UPDATE 5: For reasons unrelated to this issue, I upgraded my cable internet service to Cablevision's "Optimum Boost," which among other things is supposed to more than double Internet speed. Indeed, I'm now seeing over 20 Mbps on [...]. Nevertheless, the problem remains; the Netflix HD video is still "jerky". Apparently the problem is not the network. I think it may be that the Sony does a poor job handling the Netflix stream compared to the Amazon stream, such as, e.g., upconverting from 720p to 1080p. UPDATE 6: I did some more experimenting with the player, this time removing the HDMI connection and using component instead, setting the player's component output to 720p. This did not correct the jerky motion problem; it looked essentially the same. UPDATE 7: The June 14 firmware update (version 146) has had no effect on resolving this problem. I think it's officially hopeless. UPDATE 8: Well, after a year, there is finally a solution (and it's not the recent firmware update); great thanks to commenter Dean Ferreyra the review thread. Turning off the CineMotion feature on the Sony TV for the HDMI input where the BDP-N460 is connected appears, for the moment, to have solved the problem. Even sweeping camera shots appear smooth and fluid. Thanks so much to Dean and everyone else who has tried to help resolve this over the past year. If the problem stays solved, I may come back and change my star review. UPDATE 9: I'm

The sales folk assured us that Sony had fixed it's failings, and they have a good return policy where we bought, so we gave Sony a second chance. It works beautifully, even with Netflix. Video streams properly via wifi, and the unit has remained responsive at all times. On blu-ray the machine responds to commands instantly. The remote is well designed and easy to use. As I recall, one concern we had with this unit was that Amazon streaming video was not advertised on the box. However, the unit does in fact support Amazon. All-in-all, the unit works as designed and desired. 14 of 16 people found the following review helpful. Unreliable performance with a bad screensaver design By Abhishek K. Gupta 1. The player often hangs (gets stuck in "See you" mode or "Welcome" mode) and the only way to get out of it is to pull the power plug 2. One must wait for few minutes after turning on the player and before accessing the Internet Content since otherwise the player does not connect to the Internet (wired or wireless) and often hangs 3. The background image, while one is using the payer and browsing trough options, is a poor design of mostly dark screen with a very bright know of an image on TV's center-right. This image is so bright - and appears so often while browsing - that when one switches away from the screen (by turning on a program) - this bright spot leaves an imprint on the screen that does not go away for a long time! A strict non-no for those with plasma screens and I am not sure if it is all that good for an LCD/Edge-lit-LED TV in the long run either. 4. The 'Photo' menu option is blank and does not have things like Picasa, Photobucket etc (as are available on most Sony TVs that have Internet option) Other than these issues, the player has a built in chip for VUDU movies so one could stream HD movies. The Blu Ray player works fine. Startup time is quick (if you have that option selected at startup). However, reliability is a big issue and I am constantly frustrated with its lack of responsiveness and teh slowness with which is re-acquires its Internet connectivity after being switched on. 7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. You need a fast N Router to have flawless streaming content By Souroosh Soheili I see that a number of reviewers here are disappointed with the wireless streaming content (ie Netflix). I had the same issue until I switched my wireless router. You need a good N router that is specifically optimized for streaming video. I replaced my router with a Vizio XRW100 and the bluray player works perfectly. See all 16 customer reviews...

The fast load system is excellent and much faster than the older 300s models. The setup was easy (it walks you through each step) I use the wireless N router and the speeds are awesome. Seamless integration with our Netflix account and the ability to watch Youtube videos is a great addition to what the player can do. Great 1080p picture and good upconversion of dvds. Do not be afraid of this player. If you have a netflix account or would like to watch youtube videos on your TV- this is your player. Also on a side note- you have several other choices besides Netflix and youtube. You have Amazons video on demand service and several other free video services. 106 of 109 people found the following review helpful. BDP-S570 is super fast By D. Yohn A week or so ago I replaced my Sony BDP-S300 Blu Ray Disk player with a new model, the BDP-S570. The S570 is one of Sony's newest players, and in the middle of their consumer line as far as model lineup. It was amazingly low priced at $249. I decided to upgrade from the S300 for two main reasons. First, the load times on the S300 are excruciatingly slow, and second it cannot bitstream the newest audio codecs so I was forced to use its on-board decoder and analog output. With my new Emotiva prepro I wanted to reduce cable complexity and use HDMI only. I started doing some research into the newest crop of BRD players and was convinced I would probably get the Oppo 83. But a few reviews on CNET and elsewhere said the S570 had "the fastest load times ever tested" and they ranked it as faster than and 83. It also has some of the new whiz-bang stuff like wifi, SACD compatibility, Netflix and Amazon streaming, Profile 2.0, 1Gb internal memory, HDMI 1.4 and 3D capability. So I looked up the Sony and found it was half the price of the Oppo, and decided to go for it. I figured that for $250 if I hated it I could send it back or pawn it off onto someone else. Impressions of the Sony S570: If you are an equipment snob like me and want your gear to feel substantial, like a quality device, this machine is NOT for you. I thought the box was empty when it arrived. The machine feels like it weights a few ounces (actually it weighs 2Kg or about 4 1/2 pounds.) Upon opening it, I was even more disappointed. this thing is super cheap feeling - you know how some plastic feels "good" and other plastic feels "cheap" and flimsy? This feels cheap. The buttons on the front are almost repulsive little Chiclets about the size of the buttons on my cell phone and remind me of some kind of toy made by Coleco. The disc tray feels like I will break it if I push it in. At least the remote is pretty nice so I won't have to touch the cheesy buttons. If just feels cheap. The power cord is molded into the chassis. The chassis is a non-standard size, which always drives me mad. It is almost a standard rack width at 17" wide, but it is only 8" deep, meaning it is too shallow for any other piece of gear to sit on top of it. I had to rig some rear "feet" for my DVR to sit it on top the Sony. Initial impressions were not good at all and I thought I had made a mistake buying this thing. At least once it is in the rack it doesn't look cheap. The all-black front is not as nice as the blue tinted plastic on the S300, but it looks like it belongs in a good equipment rack. Just don't touch it. The connectors on the back feature a single HDMI jack, component and composite video, stereo analog audio (that goes with the composite video), Ethernet, digital coax and optical, and USB. There are no multichannel analog audio outputs if you need these, and I found it odd that it would offer legacy video outputs but force anyone using those to only use digital audio or HDMI for high-resolution audio. The USB connector is interesting as it allows the user to connect a memory stick (and

What's in the Box Oppo BDP-93, Remote Control, User's Manual 3D Technology Checklist This product is 3D-related. To help you get a great 3D experience, use our checklist below to ensure that you have everything you need. If you have any questions or want to learn more about 3D, we invite you to visit 3D 101--our center for everything 3D. To get started with 3D, please ensure that you have: A Display The first--and most important--item you'll need is a 3D-ready display--whether it be a 3D HDTV, 3D projector, or 3D computer monitor. These displays usually have a higher processing power than older models as they need to display one image for each eye to create a 3D effect. A Source While your display is ready for 3D playback, you still need a device to read 3D content (i.e., a movie or a show). This source can be a cable box with a subscription to a 3D channel, a 3D Blu-ray Disc player, or a PlayStation 3. Content In order to watch 3D, you will need to get some 3D content. This 3D content will come from the source mentioned above in the form of a 3D program, movie, or game. Please ensure that your 3D movies are in the Blu-ray 3D format, as this new format will provide the best 3D experience. 3D Glasses All 3D HDTVs on the market require Active Shutter glasses to create the 3D effect. You will need to buy one pair of glasses for each viewer. Also make sure that the Active Shutter glasses you buy are compatible with your display--for example, buy the glasses from the same brand as your 3D HDTV. HDMI Cable To connect your source (such as a 3D Blu-ray Disc player) to your display, you'll need a hgh-speed HDMI cable. Cables with this designation--with bandwidth speeds up to 10.2 Gbps (gigabits per second)--will be able to carry the 3D signal without any loss of quality. Impressive audio and video from Dr. Stuart Gitlow Oppo has created a name for themselves with their Blu-ray home theater enthusiasts. Ranked among the extraordinarily high end devices and players that you can buy warehouse clubs, the units have been welcomed by users Oppo really worth it, providing a quality experience. Hence the brand new OPPO BDP-93's. There were problems that were solved with the firmware update first, already included in the units of issue. Firmware updates take place wirelessly using the included wireless dongle, assuming, of course, you have a wireless network at home. You can also connect to the network using an Ethernet cable. First thought: This is a good car full of reflections on the soft front panel inputs and outputs clearly marked on the rear panel, and view an informative and useful. Drop in a DVD-A disc, for example, as in Lord of the Rings complete soundtrack set, and front panel notifies you that you're listening to a DVD-A There is no confusion, as there may be other components that though you might be a mistake to listen to the standard stereo track and create surround sound from it. The intuitive set-up of panels, accessed via the well-designed and internally illuminated remote control that quickly allows you to adjust your playback want - you can listen to the multi-speaker output from DVD-A or the mixed-down stereo version of the press of a button. And I started out with a sound discussion for a reason. Many of us with high end CD players still have an extra box in our audio stack; to find a DVD player, Blu-ray or otherwise that may play a regular CD with sufficient quality for the removal of CD player has been a difficult task. Most reviews of DVD players seem to ignore stereo audio component completely. Here, you not only have the ability to listen to DVD-A versions of audio sources when available, but you have a real reason to disconnect your CD player for good I have one of Sony's wonderful ES models from years ago which until now has been unparalleled by any reasonably priced component. The staging of the audio, though, is really improved on the Oppo over other DVD players and is at least on a par with the Sony ES CD player, if not somewhat better. Taking, for example, "Blackbirds" from the new remastered Beatles White Album, Paul is clearly staged just to the left of my right speaker. His vocals are pure and clear to an exquisite extent (sometimes to a fault as you can now clearly hear a sibilant s in the lyric - a fault of the microphones of the era - that is somewhat muffled on other equipment). Orchestral and pop music alike are impressive and clear. Of course, now you can listen not only to standard commercial CD's, but also to CD's containing .mp3 or .f flac libraries (among other alternatives) In those latter situations, your TV will function as a display, showing the titles of the entire disc's content and allowing you to easily pick your desired track. The Oppo's front drawer operates smoothly, quickly, and quietly, and the entire unit itself is inaudible in operation unless you're hovering a few inches above the component. Playback of DVD-A's and CD's are quick and straightforward. No delays in loading were apparent. Unlike many alternative models, the Oppo responds quickly. Turn it on by pushing the eject button and the unit will immediately come alive and open the drawer. There's been no time when I found myself standing next to the component and waiting for a response - as I have with many earlier Bluray players. After testing audio, I moved to streaming. Getting my Netflix account set up to stream to my BDP-93 took all of one minute. Seriously, this was far faster than I thought possible.

We bought this for our room and it was a good price for a Sony. November 8 recommend people found this review helpful. Good home theater by buying recent Vinmar. They have had a sony home theater before and this more or less meets expectations. Areas of interest are listed below: - Length of the speaker cables are less than necessary (especially for the center and subwoofer). I needed a longer cable from the use of a projector and a TV screen - however, to find a file format that can be played with the USB connection (seems not to have read any itunes / MP3) - A additional point is required to connect to wireless internet. Sony should have included built-in Wi-Fi or an Ethernet port 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. If your situation is like mine, this is perfect for you. By Lou Diesel I live in a small studio apartment The living space portion of my apt where I have this set up is about 12x20. Obviously in this small space this system is fantastic. I didn't so much want a surround system for loudness but for the surround sound effects. Everything sounds great and crystal clear once everything is on the proper settings. I only put the volume no more than half way and it's more than enough to fill the room. I worry about complaining neighbors so I set the sub woofer to it's lowest setting, yet it still gives a decent rumble that doesn't bother anyone. My complaints. Only has one usb slot in the back mainly used to connect ipod dock. Apparently has no internal memory for blu ray data(blu rays work fine so far without it). You would have to connect a usb flash if you want the memory(in the ONE usb slot available). And no built in wifi. You would have to get a separate wifi dongle sold by Sony for like 79.9 99(and once again attach it to the ONE usb slot available)Simple solutions, just use the ethernet cable instead of wireless. And buy a cheap usb splitter so you can add usb flash and ipod dock at the same time.It may not be a great choice for larger rooms or houses but if you live in a dorm, studio, or bedroom this is a great choice. After downloading the update, the bd690 shut down and the HDMI port quit working. The component and composite outputs worked fine. After testing two HDMI cords and connecting the bd690 through my Denon 3808 receiver and directly into the TV it was obvious that the problem was the bd690. LG customer service was very quick to answer but the service was average at best. The person was helpful, but was definitely reading from a script. After telling her everything I had done she started asking me to test other HDMI cords, etc, which I had already done. They even had me download the incorrect update file the first time around. Will update when I get my replacement. Hopefully the firmware update doesn't blast the HDMI port every time... Update: (5/8/2011) Called LG about replacement on 5/7 as I still have not received it. This time around they tell me I'm not getting a replacement but that they are in fact "repairing" my unit Not what they told me on the phone 3 weeks ago, and so much for the 7-10 day window. LG customer service falling quickly in my eyes. The conversation went something like this. Wondering when my replacement will come? We are repairing it so it will take a little time to go through service I was told I would get a replacement in 7-10 days I don't see that in the notes So I'm not getting a new one? Yes you will get that as soon as possible But you just said I was getting it repaired Yes So I'm getting a repaired one? Yes. Divide by zero at this point and hung up! 47 of 53 people found the following review helpful. MUCH Better Than The LG BD590...And NO PROBLEM w Upgrades By Win2000 OK...so I purchased the LG BD590 because I don't have a 3D television or plan to get one anytime soon. However, I purchased it at a great price from Amazon.com ($199). but, when you do the upgrade it prompts you to do, you have it and a few more things including a Google portway to get on the internet and use your TV as a full internet ready setup...WOW. This unit cost me $50 more than the BD590 but was well worth it...including the ability to do Hulu Plus and other stuff---games, puzzles and more...I LOVE this player...and even though it was $50 more, it also came with a FREE $5.99 credit for Vudu to watch a movie on them....great right there...Get this player and you WON'T be disappointed!!! LOVE IT. 22 of 24 people found the following review helpful. Great dvd player! By crichcreek I purchaed the 690 from Amazon several weeks ago. I received it on time and hooked it up quickly. I'm using 1.4 HDMI to my Panasonic 50GT25 and optical to my Yamaha receiver for 5.1 sound. It updated flawessly, wirelessly with a Netgear dual band router (my router is about 30 feet away in another room). Connection was no problem at all just push the button on the router and away you go It was much less fussing.
